This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of!

http://firesafecigarettes.org/

Geez--- so help me I should wash my mouth out with soap for saying this, but what stupid liberal came up with this idea?

I don't smoke-- my wife does. She stopped buying her cigarettes at the place nearest to us, because they started going out frequently-- she thought they were damaged somehow. We were not aware at the time, that this was due to a new type of cigarette sneakily making its way into our state, thanks to legislation that went into effect at the first of the year.

The Fire-safe cigarette.

Know what it does? It goes out, quickly and easily. Light one, and set it in an ashtray? It will go out by itself, almost immediately.

My wife doesn't even puff on her cigarettes fast enough to keep one lit.

This is supposedly a safety feature. Keeps abandoned cigarettes from burning down houses & starting wildfires, etc...

Two things immediately pop into my mind:

What frickin' chemical are they using to make flammable stuff NOT burn very easily? Scotchgard? Is it really a good idea to put some OTHER chemical into a product that is LOADED with carcinogens already? Sure, the tobacco industry assures the public that the new fire-safe cigarettes are no more harmful than a 'normal' cigarette! But then again, this is the same Tobacco Industry that assured us years ago 'normal' cigarettes are NOT addictive & do NOT cause cancer.

Ooooookay.

The other thing is-- and this, to me, is what puts the 'dumb' to this dumb idea: Won't people just smoke FASTER to stop the darn things going out? Which means they'll ultimately smoke more cigarettes, more quickly... ultimately making the past-time of smoking more addictive and even more hazardous to health? AND put out a lot more second-hand smoke? Plus, won't it also sell a LOT more cigarettes-- putting more money into the Tobacco Lobby as smokers more frequently replace the ones they are smoking faster & the many 'dead' ones that go out & are abandoned... & end up in landfills? :?

There's no need for that (the soap part). Americanism represents an ideal, the ideal of Liberty. At its core, it is a philosophical rejection of the nanny-state, and coercive governmental interference. As an ideal, Liberty can never be attained, but no matter, the aim is to implement better approximations that represent Liberty. But the path of Liberty is a cold and lonely one though -- self-determination, self-reliance, and taking responsibility for one's actions, no matter the consequences.

The quest for Liberty, I'm afraid, is over. It's been replaced by collectivism. If the history of 20th century international collectivism indicates and infers where this new path will lead, it's going to end in misery for our descendants.

I'm very pessimistic with regards to this experiment called the U.S.
