... and, yeah, the trailers were totally misleading & made the movie look like some kind of 'Austin Power's spoof of vampires.

I guess my comments have minor spoilers, so be warned.

The movie was a lot more serious than the trailers suggested. As for its tone, I would compare it to the original 'Addams Family' movie with Raul Julia-- high points for gloomy & mysterious atmosphere--- there are comical aspects of the 'dark' nature of Barnabas, and his confusion in the modern day after 200 years of sleep, etc... but mainly it was fairly serious, as Tim Burton movies go. It wasn't a "romp" like those trailers made it look.

I liked the movie.. and would see a sequel. It isn't without its problems, tho:

The 'love story' with Barnabas & Victoria was so choppy & nonsensical, I have to think there was a LOT of footage of their romance that ended up on the cutting room floor. Because of that, the film's conclusion is lacking. In fact, the idea of there being a LOT of edited/missing footage would explain many of the film's problems: In one scene, we're told Barnabas' parents were killed in a way that looked like an accident, but he refused to believe it was--- so he dabbled in black magic to find an explanation? What? the reference makes NO sense, and is also completely unnecessary because Barnabas never once uses black-magic nor professes to be an expert in it, ever, in the film. Maybe there was some 'seance' scene that got cut or something?

Still-- I would like to see a director's cut, just to see if that resolves a lot of the movie's problems. Whatever-- It was MUCH better than the Burton/Depp collab 'Charlie & The Chocolate Factory'... I give Dark Shadows, the movie, at least a b-minus.

I refuse to see any movie with a character named Barnabas. I have no idea why.

On a side note, I don't like gravy.

Yeah, but I still wish they'd toned back the fish-out-of-water humor a bit. The only joke that I unconditionally liked was Barnabus thinking Alice Cooper was a woman.

Geez... next thing you know he'll be saying Marilyn Manson isn't a woman.

I can't tell you how much I hated this horrible drivel of a movie. Dan Curtis must be
rolling over in his grave. I had waited for years for this movie to come out, then I had
to face the crushing disappointment when I saw this mess. It made me sick.
In other words, it sucked.
