I didn't know where else to put this, but I have to tell someone.
Because of one of those free cable movie previews, I ended up watching several movies and an episode of Mythbusters with the theme of "Let's try to kill Hitler". A sub-theme of "Aaarghhh...if only...." became apparent.
First up was Valkyrie (2008). I've never been a fan of Tom Cruise, but after this movie I might have to consider him as "competent actor if the director can curb his excesses" (same as "Admiral Mumbles"). The movie itself showed a nice restrained sense of tension and the story and the characters were presented clearly. My first "Aaargh" of the day: when the credits rolled and I found out it was directed by Bryan Singer.
Mythbusters then took on the myth that had Hitler and Company been in the originally planned bunker, Hitler would have died. That myth was busted.
Finally I watched Inglourious Basterds (2009) directed and written by Quentin Tarantino. I've seen some Tarantino films and enjoy them, but am not a rabid fan. I particularly liked this one in that the villain wasn't an idiot, but got his in the end (actually forehead). I also enjoyed the ending spectacular at the theatre. When this movie's credits rolled, I found out the Visual Effects Designer was John Dykstra. (The second "Aaargh" of the day.) I swear the guy is a genius. Enough explosions to make an impact, but not too many to desensitize.
If anyone makes a revival movie of Battlestar Galactica with a large cast, I vote for Singer...oh,wait, weren't they planning this once upon a time...? This is the second movie he's directed where I didn't need a scorecard to keep track of the characters.
